In January, 2015 the Helping Humanity Fund visited Cambodia Child’s Dream Organization in Cambodia, seeing some of the 15 water wells and 3 latrines we have sponsored over the past few months. We also visited 3 additional water wells sponsored by friends.
We got to meet the various families these wells serve, and learn their different stories.
The situations vary, but all are very poor – some very extremely. Based on our observations on the ground, it is safe to say that the work being done is extremely important and helpful to the families and communities.
There were instances where families we visited had taken great initiative – such as one family who developed an impressive garden, and another a chicken and duck farm. In these cases, we offered to provide these families with additional assistance in order to help them expand on the work they are doing.
We also got to learn all about well design, issues around filtration, sanitation, etc – and approaches different NGOs take.
It is our intention to continue to fund additional wells in the future, and follow up regularly with both our wells and the wells of our friends.
The following are a few photos of this trip and some of the families we visited:
This family has a garden. Now that there is a supply of readily-available water, as well as a means to irrigate, they can expand what they are doing. We provided funds for additional seeds and plan to follow up in additional visits in the future.
Here we found a lot of kids from a very poor family. You can see the house and general conditions. Having access to running water that is safer to drink is something extremely important to them.
This family had received a latrine. The conditions they are living in are extremely poor. The child the mother is holding has burn scars on his face. I had given him and his brother a couple chocolate croissants I had taken from the hotel as snacks. My guess is, it was their first time having this.
We gave out toothbrushes and toothpaste to this family who recently received a latrine.
Often multiple families / households will share the same well, as you can see in this photo:

This family who received a well, has a duck and chicken farm. Access to water is critical. We provided funds for them to expand on what they are doing, and will follow up in future visits.
