Van Lam Project –
In January, 2015 the Helping Humanity Fund visited Van Lam to distribute school supplies to 297 children across 3 schools who come from very poor and ethnic backgrounds. We were met with the deepest levels of appreciation from the students and teachers.
Secondary school students each received 10 notebooks, 5 pens, as well as a piece of candy.
Primary school students received 10 notebooks, 3 high quality pens, a pencil, erasure, as well as a piece of candy.
These bundles are meant to last each student for ½ a year.
Including van rental and gasoline, the cost to supply each student came out to $4.13.
Excluding transportation costs, the cost came in at $3.80 per student.
In the future, we think these costs can be lowered by ordering directly from the factory (as opposed to buying through the Vietnam equivalent of “Costco”) and having shipment to Van Lam several weeks before our trip.
Below are photos of this project. Below the photos are the scans of the receipts. Our costs were the following (based on exchange rate of $1 USD = 21,350 VND):
Supplies = 24,052,100 VND ($1,126.57 USD), receipts provided below
Transportation costs (no receipts provided):
2 days van rental = 1,500,000 VND ($70.26 USD)
Gasoline = 600,000 ($28.11 USD)
Total transportation cost = 1,500,000 VND + 600,000 VND = 2,100,000 VND ($98.37)
Total supplies + transport cost = 26,152,100 VND ($1,224.93 USD)
This is a project we intend to do regularly, to ensure the same students receive an ongoing source of supplies to help them through school. We hope to expand upon this effort in the future.
